Dave,
Would enjoy talking sometime. I posted an email on your growthbusters website previously, don't know if you saw it. But, yes, I'd be interested in talking. I am limited in the time I can devote to this project, but would like to get input from persons more experienced in making films about how to go about doing this; but my gut feeling is this should get done -- by someone!

cheers,
rick

Chris,
Thanks for your comment. I will certainly check in with Mr Korten on my plans, which are just in the idea stage at this point, but ... given his professed ideals in his writings, I cannot imagine he would be in opposition to such a project. Which leads me to the open question: why do you offer this cautionary note? What experience have you had that leads you to suggest this? Please do share...
Regards,
rick

I hired a great archivist who put together a directory of the latest greatest environmental documentaries. If you want to access the directory go to

Warm cheers,

Rick,

David Korten holds his work close -- in intellectual property terms.
I would check with him and his wife before you consider the next step.

Well, Rick. I'm just down the Interstate in Colorado Springs and have the skillset, and clearly the interest in the subject. We should chat.

ps -- I hope to offer my online course by Fall 2010....

I teach environmental economics at a community college here in Colorado (Front Range Community College, or FRCC, see www.frontrange.edu) and have been funded to start developing an online version of the course, which I hope to offer by 2010. Of course, I want to include some video content, and to incorporate ideas and concepts from The Great Turning by David Korten, and from ecological economics. I am not experienced in making videos, but intend to start learning through the media services resources available to me at FRCC. I have no immediate questions for this group, but perhaps I will in the future.

I am interested in another project: making a documentary based on The Great Turning book. When I read in in 2008, I was astounded, and it was really motivated me to get involved in my local transition groups in and around Boulder, CO. However, I've not been satisfied with local activities that lack the more global and national level institutional issues that are really at the roots of many of our environmental and economic problems -- which will never be solved just working at the community levels; it might start in the community, but it must address this larger institutional issues as well.

Hence my interest in making a documentary about the book The Great Turning. I am also a programmer by vocation, and would be willing to host and develop this on a separate website.

If anyone is interested in working with me on this -- especially if you have experience in making documentaries! -- please do get in touch.

cheers,
Rick Casey

I don't think it would be too difficult to create a central repository of info on these films. Just need someone with a little time, the interest, and perhaps strong ning skillset.

On the subject of sharing films & footage, check out www.citizenglobal.com

This looks like a very interesting model. Can't help but think it's expensive to have storage for all the media, but it is an impressive concept and interface.

All,
We all are working on projects to deepen and widen the conversation about Transition. It would be interesting to develop a list of both existing films AND new films dealing with all the elements of the transition challenge and post it on Transition US.

Or we might even aggregate a bunch of our projects into one fundraising appeals (perhaps with a match requirement) and seek big bucks from a major funder. These are just thoughts. I know that my films, "What Will We Eat?", "The Organic Opportunity", "COMING HOME: E.F. Schumacher and the Reinvention of the Local Economy", "The Next Industrial Revolution" all would sell considerably more copies if there was a review - listing mechanism. I am sure this is true for everyone on this list. We should discuss this here or off list. My email is chrisbedford@charter.net

After owning and managing a large used and rare bookstore for 20 years, I agree with Randy. I still love books but digital video in the hands of good intelligent people is power; we can use wisely in this transformational time. I too want to know more how Ning can help us do this?
