We have had lots of kids involved in the sugarhouse over the years. They are not the ones doing the vandalism. There is another element that is around here. They drive big trucks, do a lot of drugs…

No Peak in Oil Before 2030, Study Says

Move along folks, nothing to see here. No peak before 2030. Nothing to worry about. Go out and shop. Load up those credit cards. Christmas is coming. Don't be a Scrooge!

Hi folks, Though of course i assume these are "valid, important and honest observations" they just don't correspond to mine at all. It may have to do with my own "class" background, being of the "working" class, but i certainly don't feel any mora…

I just went to a transition training in Boston. It was very inspiring. Now I'm back in Skowhegan. It is not far from the Boston area, but it's a different world. I think that places like ours, on the margins have a very different feel to them. We a…

I just did the Transition Training down in Boston with Tina Clarke. It was really inspiring to be with people who choose hope over fear.

I just did the transition training in Boston and found out that 2 of my friends were unemployed. They both were going through some changes. What to do? There are more jobs down there, but their burn rate is higher too, since it costs a lot more to l…

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I am involved with Sustain Mid Maine, and have a peak oil group that has been going for more than 5 years. I am aware of Transition, but haven't been able to get to any meetings because the nearest site is an hour and a half away.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I am interested in Transition because I see it as the best way to make it to a more sustainable model. I have been interested in Peak Oil for over 10 years now.
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
I have a solar-electric car and it is a really good way to get people talking about possibilities. Our town may be a good place to start a transition movement in Central Maine.

I have a small maple syrup operation for the past 10 years with a partner here in Skowhegan.

What an inspiring video, Iver! Maple syruping always seemed so "Currier & Ives" and quintessential to the Northeast. Glad you are keeping up traditions in a sustainable way.

Thanks for your comments regarding the "Titanic" and "Lifeboat" concepts. Yes, we agree it's an apt metaphor. When Christopher first heard the comparison about 10 years ago, he carved a sign and hung it outside his cabin:"Titanic Lifeboat Construction Co." I've always believed it's easier to start an alternative than to buck the system. (Later I read a Buckminster Fuller quote: "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." I agree!) So, when Christopher and I met, it was inevitable we'd found the Titanic Lifeboat Academy, to study and teach how to build lifeboats.

"Welcome aboard!" Glad to learn about your homestead in ME.

I know Farmington -- nice little town. I was there in early March 2006. Thanks for speaking out on Saturday!

How do the big wheels do off-road?
I'm going to turn my pal onto the web site.
Do like the AGMs in the vehicle?
I've got big surrettes for the house system but had considered getting AGMs for awhile. The golf cart has 8 volt trojans in it and our mobile pv system utilizes 6 volt bottom of the line golf cart batteries.
talk with you later, kj

Hey hey...what kind of electric car do you have?
I have a 48 VDC golf cart that I charge off my PV system. It is a step in the right direction and could get me some distance in the event someone needs help birthing a baby, dying or with emergency care ...but it is really a put put mode of transport. Sure beats a horse or burro though:-)
