Hi Kathy -

We're having a Climate Festival here in Cotati, CA. We'll have electric vehicles on display, postcards you can send to your reps, a community art project, face painting and solar cookies! So far, the weather forecast looks promising -- we're getting the rain out of the way now!

cheers!

Hi Judith, Yes, it's a knock your socks off kind of shift. Big coal has been so entrenched in the politics that this news was a big shocker for many people. It is very good news. And, I think the people raising their voices, the assistance that ca...

Profile Information

How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
I've been traveling a parallel path for over 30 yrs and am here now at this place of convergence!

I am an advocate for the Transition Model, have read a lot and am always seeking more with an open mind to new possibilities. I am very thankful that I was able to attend the December LA Training for Transition. I am primarily active on Transition Ohio these days but try to stop by to visit and glean info from folks on this list to pass along to others on a regular basis.

View my page on Transition Ohio
I am a life-long learner, practitioner, teacher, organizer and share the Broadwell Hill Learning Center with others for respite and reconnection while inviting people to tour and participate in the demonstration projects here. I am striving to strengthen my neighborhood connections while networking and collaborating with the larger community.

I am currently planning a March 28th Conversation Cafe in conjunction with Global Conversation Week and Ohio Severe Spring Weather Awareness Week. This event will incorporate a follow-up Transition Initiative event to help satisfy the desires people have for next step possibilities.

I strive to do my best, avoid assumptions, refrain from taking things personally and be impeccable with word and deed (Toltec Way of Wisdom). I practice ways to bridge the left/right sides of my brain and connect with all life while seeking and listening to inner guidance. I love to actively listen to people and participate in respectful dialogue within co-intelligent processes of teamwork.

I also like to experiment/utilize various communication/conversational literacy tools, organizational structure templates and decision making models toward building a strong foundation of common knowledge that helps save time, minimize redundancy while increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

I believe it is very important to gather as many supplies and tools as possible for this historic journey and learn which ones work best for any given situation.

We do not have time to allow our beloved egos to run the show, re-invent the wheel or grope around in the dark.

I therefore hope we will all make the effort and take the time to familarize ourselves with Transition Network materials so that we can embark on this adventure into unknown terroritory with good supply of common knowledge at our disposal. We may decide to vere off the well-worn path but at least we would be able to make informed decisions about it.

After all, we also need humility and open-mindedness to new ideas and visions if we're going to tap into the creative wisdom and learn to adapt within this highly complex and dynamic process of evolution.
In what ways do you identify with the Transition movement? Why are you interested?
I have been manifesting my visions and practicing the skills for a very long time. However, I am also a life-long learner and open to new ways of looking at things.

I am a positive goal-oriented person who knows I must also look at risk/threat assessments and plan/prepare/mitigate and practice working with others within an all hazard worse case scenarios systems approach.

It may seem to some like I am a survivalist seeking to live a lifestyle of self-sufficiency but I am driven to help develop systems of interdependence and localization toward greater overall resilience.

I know from experience that the top-down approach is not going to solve our problems. Our community leaders and political administrations know they need our participation but don't know how to go about changing the paradigm to make it happen.

I served as our county's public health preparedness/bioterrorism infrastructure coordinator and interacted with numerous governmental and social support agencies.

Health departments all around the country are tasked via large homeland security related grants to move from silos to systems, develop a robust and resilient public health infrastructure to ensuring the health and well-being of the citizenry with a worse-case scenario, all hazard systems approach.

The health department terminated my employment however the unemployment commission determined I had been discharged without just cause, due to the roots of whistleblower activities.

I have not ceased my efforts on the grassroots level and feel it is imperative that we, the people, rise up, get over our "us vs them" mentalities and start working with each other.

We are all in the same life boat. We all have a paddle available to us and lo and behold we are all here with paddles in hand striving to learn how to work together on behalf of each other, our children and all life.

I rejoice that the Transition Movement is now rolling out in the US and picking up steam!!!

I believe the transition movement with its permaculture roots and the dual driver approach (peak oil/climate change) offers us great potential! Let us not forget there are also other things to prepare for as well, like the pandemic flu. I believe the transition model can help us develop our skills at communication, decision making within complex dynamics and teamwork within a bottom-up/top down systems approach to all hazard planning, rebuilding community resiliency and creating a legacy for our children.

Thank you for all you are doing!
How can you help the growth/acceptance/vitality of the Transition movement? What can YOU teach us? What can your GROUP teach us?
I can continue to learn, practice, develop skills and offer forth any information and services that may be helpful.

I can develop relations with my neighbors and my larger community while expressing my desire to begin collectively building the systems needed for a post-carbon, limited resource, localized civilization.

I can strive to inspire individual action toward lifestyle change, the creation of neighborhood groups and transition initiatives within a networked system of teamwork.

I can plant a lot of seeds and throw a lot of pebbles into the pond of considerations. After all, one never knows which seeds may sprout or where the ripples may reach.

I can seek inner guidance, give great thanks, actively listen, learn and have a heck of a lot of fun on this adventure...Tally Ho!

Grist: Top 25 reasons to give a damn about climate change

For some people, climate change is a tough cause to rally ‘round—even those who understand that it’s happening and that it’s human-caused get distracted by things like eating, working, having sex, watching TV, or watching people on TV have sex.

While social scientis… Continue

A tale of two presidents - and how you can invite Obama to lead like Nasheed (Please share!)

Here's a new editorial by Bill McKibben in the Washington Post -- Bill explores the possibilities of what an Obama administration that led on climate change might look like, inspired by Maldives President Nasheed. This is the kind of imagined leadership we can help make a reality by organizing for climate action in our communities -- and leading ourselves. Are you organizing a ViContinue
